Save Money and Make Liqueur

With Christmas fast approaching it is not only time to sort out menus and food, but also the alcohol requirements to suit your guests. The alcohol in particular can become expensive, so  if one bottle of cheap vodka could somehow magically be transformed into two bottles of great tasting flavoured liqueur….

Take 1 cheap (or not cheap!) bottle of vodka and 1 extra empty sterilized bottle.

Chocolate Liqueur

3 or 4 standard size Mars Bars

Method

Cut the Mars Bars into smallish chunks and place in a glass bowl over a pan of simmering water. Melt the Mars Bars over a gentle heat, the bowl must not touch the water.

Once the Mars Bars have melted remove from the heat and slowly stir in 1/2 of the bottle of vodka.

When the mixture is cool pour into a sterilized bottle, if necessary top up with a little water.

Let it mature in the fridge for a couple of weeks, giving it a shake to mix every now, consume within six weeks and store in the fridge in between.

Mixed Berries Liqueur

300g of mixed berries, defrost of frozen

450g sugar

1 pint of water

Method

Microwave the berries until they begin to breakdown and there is some fruit juice.

Add the sugar and either mash or whizz together.

Put the bowl back into the microwave and bring to the boil (this also sterilizes the mixture)

Strain the mixture through a sieve and you should now have a thin syrup.

Allow to cool and add the water and the other 1/2 bottle of vodka.

Mature and store as for the Chocolate Liqueur.
